Steps

  1. Check that your nationality is subject to a visa, then apply for the visa before travelling, from your country of origin or the country where you legally reside.
  2. Submit the application no earlier than 3 months before the date of travel.
  3. Submit a separate application for each traveller: Ireland issues neither family visas nor electronic visas.
  4. Gather all supporting documents before entering the application online.
  5. Enter the application online, in English: type “Short Stay (C)”, journey “Single” or “Multiple”, and the exact reason, for example “Visit Tourist” for a holiday.
  6. Note the eight-digit application number assigned by AVATS; the entry can be saved and resumed for 30 days.
  7. Validate the application (“Submit”), print the application form and sign its declaration: only the applicant signs.
  8. Pay the visa fee according to the instructions on the summary form; payment methods and currencies vary between offices.
  9. Send the signed and dated form and the documents to the office indicated; for the Dublin visa office, send within 30 days of creating the AVATS application.
  10. Provide your biometric data if your submission office requires it: it confirms whether they are necessary and how to provide them.
  11. Wait for the decision before buying tickets: approximately 8 weeks after receipt of the file, longer if documents are missing or need to be verified.
  12. On arrival, present to the immigration officer the passport, the visa and copies of the documents in the file; they may refuse entry despite the visa.
