Steps

Tourist visa

  1. Check on the portal "Il visto per l'Italia", through the guided procedure in four questions (nationality, country of stable residence, duration and purpose of stay), whether an entry visa is required.
  2. Identify the competent representation: the Italian consulate of the district where the applicant legally resides, when Italy is the sole or main destination of the trip.
  3. Make an appointment, as a general rule granted within 15 days, and follow the consulate's instructions for the interview and personal presence. Fingerprinting applies according to the VIS reuse rules and the exceptions provided for.
  4. Submit the completed and signed form, the photograph, a valid travel document on which the visa can be affixed and, when requested, the supporting documents.
  5. Attest the purpose of the trip, the means of transport and return, the means of subsistence during the trip and stay, and the accommodation conditions.
  6. Pay the visa fees when filing the application.
  7. Await the examination: the representation assesses the admissibility of the application in light of the documents and the interview, then carries out the prior security checks by consulting the VIS.

Student visa

  1. Choose a programme at an Italian higher education institution, check its admission conditions and contact it; each institution sets its own requirements, including the language of the course.
  2. File the pre-enrolment and the documents required by the institution on Universitaly; for EUI or EPLO/ELGS, follow the direct procedure with the consulate provided for by the circular.
  3. Obtain the pre-enrolment summary validated by the institution, without reservation except in the cases expressly admitted, then complete the information intended for the consulate.
  4. At the consular appointment, present the documents for the course: pre-enrolment if applicable, diplomas, certificates, language, funds, accommodation and health coverage. The consulate also collects fingerprints for the national visa under the procedure.
  5. Respect the deadline: for 2026/2027, visa applications for bachelor's degree, university master's degree (cycle 2) and academic diplomas, including single cycles, no later than 30 November 2026; for other programmes, before the start of courses.
  6. After arrival in Italy with a national type D visa for studies, apply for the study residence permit at the Questura (immigration office) within 8 working days; the application may be made through a post office.
  7. Complete enrolment. For bachelor’s degrees, lauree magistrali and academic diplomas at level 1 or 2 (including single-cycle courses), the visa is revoked from 31 January of the academic year if enrolment is missing from Universitaly.

Work visa

  1. The employer, Italian or foreign regularly resident in Italy, applies for the nulla osta to the Single Desk for Immigration, only after the publication of the decree on entry flows in the Official Journal.
  2. 2027 quotas: pre-filling of nulla osta applications on the ALI Services Portal of the Ministry of the Interior from 23 October to 7 December 2026; digital identity SPID or CIE required to access the portal.
  3. On the quota opening day, the employer submits the application: 16 February 2027 at 9 a.m. for non-seasonal employed work (form B2020), 18 February 2027 for family assistance; submission possible until 31 December 2027 within the quota limit.
  4. The Single Desk issues the nulla osta (60 days at most after allocation to the quotas) and sends it electronically to the employer and to the Italian diplomatic representation of the worker's country of origin.
  5. The worker submits his entry visa application to the consulate of Italy of the country where he resides or of which he is a national.
  6. After the consulate's checks, the employer confirms its nulla osta application within 15 days; without confirmation, the application is deemed refused and the nulla osta already issued is revoked. The consulate then issues the visa.
  7. After entry into Italy, the employer and the worker sign the residence contract within 15 days; the employer transmits it electronically to the Single Desk for the residence permit application.
