Documents requested
Passport valid for at least 3 months after the planned date of departure from New Zealand, used for the application and for travelConditions and details
The NZeTA is applied for with a passport, which must be the same as the one used for travel. The details entered must match those in the passport exactly, otherwise boarding may be refused. The passport remains valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from New Zealand; check-in may be refused if the passport expires soon.An acceptable photograph of the face, or a device (phone) to take oneConditions and details
The portal asks for a photograph of the face, or a device such as a phone to take one. It is collected as biometric data to establish the applicant's identity, verify it and help decide the application. The official page refers to guidance on acceptable photographs for a visa or an NZeTA.Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA and the IVL levyConditions and details
The portal asks for a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card. The NZeTA and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) are paid together, at the time of application.Contact email addressConditions and details
The portal asks for an email address to contact the applicant. If the NZeTA is approved, a confirmation email is sent; Immigration New Zealand also contacts the applicant if further information is needed.Prepaid onward ticket from New Zealand to a country you have the right to enterConditions and details
At check-in, the traveller must be able to show that they intend to leave the country at the end of the stay: an already paid onward ticket to a country they have the right to enter, or, for departure by cruise or private craft, the cruise itinerary or a letter from the craft's owner. The departure date is within 3 months of arrival (6 months for United Kingdom nationals). If the traveller continues to a country that also requires an onward ticket, the ticket for that country may be requested.NZeTA confirmation email, to be presented at check-in and on arrivalConditions and details
If the NZeTA is approved, a confirmation email is sent. It must be kept with you at check-in for the flight or cruise, together with the passport and proof of the onward journey from New Zealand; at the border, the traveller presents their passport, this confirmation email and their traveller declaration.New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) completed before arrivalConditions and details
Complete the NZTD declaration before arrival. By air, you can submit it from 24 hours before the start of the journey; by sea, from 24 hours before departure from the last foreign port to New Zealand. With an NZeTA, indicate that you are applying for a visa on arrival. A paper form is available if you cannot complete it online.
Depending on your situation
Proof of sufficient funds (NZD 1,000 per month, or NZD 400 per month if accommodation is paid), if requestedConditions and details
At check-in or on arrival, the traveller may have to show that they have at least 1,000 New Zealand dollars per month of stay, or 400 dollars per month if accommodation is already paid. Possible evidence: proof of prepayment of accommodation (vouchers or hotel receipts), bank or credit card statements, bank drafts or travellers' cheques. A sponsor cannot cover the costs: a traveller who needs a sponsor must apply for a visa before departure.
Official fees
- NZeTA — application on the website, per person 23 NZD
- NZeTA — application in the mobile application, per person 17 NZD
- IVL — if applicable, paid with the NZeTA and non-refundable 100 NZD
Steps
- Check that one is travelling with the passport of a country or territory exempt from visa and that one is not exempt from NZeTA (valid New Zealand visa, Australian or New Zealand passport).
- Prepare the passport, a photograph of the face, a Visa or Mastercard and an email address; plan for an outbound ticket from New Zealand and evidence of financial means.
- Apply for the NZeTA on the official Immigration New Zealand website or in the NZeTA application: traveller information, photograph, data verification, declaration, then payment.
- Pay the NZeTA fees: 23 NZD on the web or 17 NZD in the application. Add the IVL of 100 NZD if it applies to your situation; it is paid with the application
- Wait for the decision: most applications are processed within 72 hours at most, some longer; the application status can be tracked online.
- Receive confirmation of your NZeTA, which is valid for 2 years for multiple visits, and check that its details match your passport exactly.
- Complete the NZTD before arrival: submission possible from 24 hours before the start of travel by plane, or before departure from the last foreign port by sea. Indicate the visa request on arrival
- At flight check-in, present the passport used for the application, the NZeTA confirmation email and the proof of the outbound travel from New Zealand.
- On arrival, present passport, confirmation and declaration; if the conditions are met, a Visa Waiver Visitor Visa is issued at the border, without charge.
- During the stay, remain at most 3 months (6 months for United Kingdom nationals) and at most 6 months over any 12-month period; a longer stay requires a visa applied for before arrival.
Where to apply
- Official Immigration New Zealand NZeTA application website (nzeta.immigration.govt.nz): one application per person
- NZeTA mobile application (iOS and Android), the fastest and cheapest means: up to 10 people at a time, with passport and payment card scanning
- Tracking of the application status and request to modify the NZeTA, from the official website
- New Zealand traveller declaration (NZTD), online or on a paper form for those who cannot complete it online
Good to know
Validity and multiple visitsConditions and details
An approved NZeTA is valid for 2 years and allows multiple visits of at most 3 months each (6 months for United Kingdom nationals). Total stay is limited to 6 months in any 12-month period, counted by going back 12 months from the planned date of departure from New Zealand. A traveller who has already spent 6 months in that period must apply for a visitor visa before travelling. The NZeTA does not guarantee entryConditions and details
The Visa Waiver Visitor Visa is granted at the border if the officer considers that the conditions are met. Entry may be refused, in particular if the traveller is not a bona fide visitor, does not meet the good character conditions, has had a change in circumstances since the NZeTA was approved, refuses to have their photograph, fingerprints or iris scan taken, or cannot show an onward journey from New Zealand or the necessary funds.Good health and good characterConditions and details
You must meet the health and character conditions. A criminal conviction, a previous deportation or exclusion, or a risk to security, public order or the public interest may prevent travel or entry. If you doubt that you meet these conditions, apply for a visa before departure. A consultation or medical treatment requires a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa.Permitted activities and covering costsConditions and details
This visa allows holidays, visits to relatives and study of up to 3 months in any 12-month period. It does not allow work in New Zealand; remote work for an employer or client established abroad may be allowed under the conditions provided. If you need a sponsor for your costs, apply for a visa before travelling.Health costs and insuranceConditions and details
Health care and medical assistance in New Zealand are at the traveller's expense. Comprehensive medical insurance is recommended for the stay. Additional conditions apply to pregnant women, and some people may be entitled to public care.Family or groupConditions and details
Each member of the family or group has their own NZeTA and meets the same conditions: a child listed in a parent's passport must also have an NZeTA, applied for with the details from the parent's passport. With the website, one application per person is required; with the app, you can apply for up to 10 people at once.Non-refundable feesConditions and details
The IVL is not refunded, even if the application is refused. NZeTA fees are not refunded if the visa is not granted at the border. IVL exemptions exist depending on passport, visa and reason for travel, in particular for Australian or New Zealand passports, certain Pacific passports and certain residence permits. Check your situation with the official fees tool.Translations of documentsConditions and details
Immigration New Zealand recommends presenting certified English translations of documents written in another language on arrival, with scanned copies of the originals. The translator must comply with its official requirements.Travellers exempt from NZeTAConditions and details
Travellers who have a valid New Zealand visa (work, student, visitor, resident or permanent resident), those travelling with an Australian passport, a New Zealand passport or a foreign passport bearing an endorsement of New Zealand citizenship, as well as members of Antarctic scientific programmes and visiting forces, with supporting documents, are not required to have an NZeTA.Stay exceeding the granted durationConditions and details
Respect the duration granted by the visa issued on arrival: this visa expires at the end of the authorized period or when you leave the country, whichever occurs first. The validity of the NZeTA does not extend the stay. To stay longer, a suitable visa is required; a new NZeTA is not enough.
