Depending on your situation
Fingerprints of all ten fingers on first application, except fingerprints registered less than 59 months ago in the Visa Information System, children under 12 years of age and other exemptionsConditions and details
The fingerprints of all ten fingers are in principle taken when the first application is submitted. If they were recorded in the Visa Information System less than 59 months ago, the representation may reuse them for a subsequent application. They may be taken again in case of doubt about identity, if they cannot be carried over from the previous application, or if their quality does not allow them to be used. They are not taken from children under 12 years of age, from persons for whom this is physically impossible, or from Heads of State or Government, members of national governments, their spouses and members of official delegations travelling on official invitation. The questionnaire does not collect this information: the condition is to be verified by the applicant.Accommodation with a private individual: invitation from the host, with signature officially legalised or certified by the foreigners policeConditions and details
For a visit by invitation, the ministry's list cites: an invitation issued by a private individual, with the inviter's signature officially legalised; an invitation certified by the competent department of the aliens police of the Bureau of Border and Alien Police; an invitation issued by a legal person (company, institution or organisation), with the signature of its legal representative legalised. If the commercial register indicates that the company's managers act jointly, all of them sign the invitation. An invitation in which the host confirms accommodation also serves as proof of accommodation. For a national of a third country who lives in a country other than their country of origin: document proving authorised stay in that country, for example a residence permit or a long-stay visaConditions and details
This document is presented to verify that the representation is competent to receive the application. The questionnaire does not compare the country of residence and nationality: the condition is to be verified by the applicant.
Official fees
- Schengen visa — standard adult fee, excluding reductions and waivers; not refunded if refused 90 €
- Schengen visa — reduced treaty rate (including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus), excluding Cabo Verde and waivers; replaces the standard fee 35 €
- Schengen visa — adult citizen of Cabo Verde, unless exempt from the fee; replaces the standard fee 67.50 €
Steps
- Check whether the nationality is subject to the short-stay visa requirement (Regulation (EU) 2018/1806): the stay does not exceed 90 days in total over any period of 180 days.
- Determine the competent State: the single State visited, otherwise the State of the main destination (purpose or duration of stay), failing that the State whose external border is crossed first.
- In principle, lodge the application in the country where you are legally staying; if you are staying there legally without residing there, the representation may receive it if lodging the application in that country is justified.
- On the website of the competent Slovak representation, check where the application is received (representation or visa centre), how to book an appointment and which documents are required in that country.
- Complete the visa application form (downloaded or completed through the electronic application), print it and sign it.
- Gather the documents: form, travel document, photograph, evidence of the purpose of the journey, of accommodation, of financial means and of the intention to leave the Schengen area, travel medical insurance.
- Lodge the application in person, at the earliest 6 months and as a general rule at the latest 15 calendar days before the journey; allow time for obtaining an appointment.
- Pay the visa fee of 90 euros, a processing fee that is non-refundable in the event of refusal, plus the service fees of the visa centre if the application is submitted there.
- Wait for the decision: as a general rule within 15 calendar days of receipt of the application, up to 45 days in the event of a detailed examination or additional documents.
- In the event of refusal, the standard notification form indicates the avenues of appeal; the appeal is lodged with the representation that decided, within 15 days of receipt of the decision.
- On arrival in Slovakia, declare the start, place and expected duration of the stay to the police within 3 working days; at a hotel or in accommodation, the accommodation provider does so.
Where to apply
- Competent embassy or consulate of the Slovak Republic, where the visa application is submitted in person
- Visa centre managed by an external service provider, where Slovakia uses one; not all types of application are always accepted there
- Mission of another Member State, or its visa centre, which represents Slovakia in certain countries according to the list of representation agreements; Schengen visa only
- Ministry electronic visa application: it is used to fill in the form, which is then printed, signed and submitted to the representation or the visa centre
- Schengen visa application forms in PDF (Slovak, English, Spanish, Russian, French, German), published by the Ministry
Good to know
Representation agreements of SlovakiaConditions and details
In some countries, a visa application for Slovakia is submitted at a representation of another state, which also decides on the issuing of the visa; only a Schengen visa can be applied for in this way, while a national long-stay visa can only be applied for at a Slovak representation. According to the ministry's list updated on 5 August 2024, Austria receives applications in Rabat (Morocco) and Amman (Jordan), the Czech Republic in Algiers (Algeria) and Islamabad (Pakistan), Switzerland in Tunis (Tunisia) and the Netherlands in Dakar (Senegal). The list is published country by country and may change: consult it before submitting an application.Visa centresConditions and details
A Schengen visa application is submitted at the competent local representation; it may also be submitted at a visa centre when Slovakia cooperates with an external provider in the country where the applicant lives. The existence of a visa centre does not mean that all types of application are received there: some applications are submitted directly at the representation or under a special procedure. The ministry's page lists visa centres in the following countries: Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Cyprus, China, Egypt, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Ireland, South Africa, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Palestinian territory and Vietnam.Additional documents and requirements specific to the country of submissionConditions and details
The documents page gives a general overview: the documents required may vary depending on the country where the application is submitted, and this list may not contain all the requirements applicable to a given territory. In individual cases, the representation may request other documents in order to verify the declared purpose of the journey and the applicant's intention to return to his or her country of origin or residence. The current requirements should be consulted on the website of the competent Slovak representation. Special conditions apply to family members of a Union citizen.Visa centre service fees and payment of feesConditions and details
When the application is lodged at a visa centre, the applicant pays, in addition to the processing fee, a service fee the amount of which depends on the country and which is set by a contract between the ministry and the external provider. The visa fee is paid in a freely convertible currency or in the national currency of the third country where the application is lodged, at the reference rate of the European Central Bank or of the National Bank of Slovakia; it does not depend on the requested period of validity. The applicant pays for the processing of the application, not for the granting of the visa: the fee is not refunded in the event of refusal. The representation provides details on the currency and the accepted means of payment.Exemptions from the visa feeConditions and details
Certain categories of applicants are exempt from the processing fee: children under 6 years of age, pupils, students and the teachers accompanying them for studies or training, researchers, representatives of non-profit organisations aged 25 or under who participate in events organised by those organisations, as well as, under Slovak law, family members of Union citizens or of Slovak citizens. Other categories (children aged 6 to 18, holders of diplomatic and service passports, young people aged 25 or under participating in events of non-profit organisations) may be exempted at the discretion of each Member State. Visa facilitation agreements may also provide for exemptions for certain categories of nationals.Calculation of the 90 daysConditions and details
For each day of stay, the 180 days preceding it are examined. The visa may have a validity of up to 5 years, but this does not allow a person to remain in the Schengen area without interruption: the number of days entered on the sticker and the 90-days-in-180 rule apply. An online Schengen calculator of the European Commission, to which the page refers, helps to calculate the remaining days. Exceeding the authorised duration may lead to an administrative removal or an entry ban.A visa does not guarantee entryConditions and details
A visa does not automatically authorise entry into the Schengen area: the entry conditions are checked at the external border. The visa holder may be asked to present the documents justifying the purpose and conditions of the stay, and sufficient means for the stay and the return, and entry may be refused. If 90 days have already been spent in the current 180-day period, entry may be refused.Territorial validity of the visaConditions and details
The sticker shows the territorial validity, the period of validity, the number of days of authorised stay and the number of entries. A visa with limited territorial validity is valid only in the territory of one or more Member States. With a single-entry visa, leaving the Schengen area ends the validity of the visa; a multiple-entry visa allows several entries and exits during its validity and the authorised period of stay.Refusal and appealsConditions and details
In the event of refusal, annulment or revocation of a visa, the applicant receives the standard reasoned notification form, together with the means of appeal. The appeal is lodged with the Slovak representation that decided, within 15 days of receipt of the decision (30 days for a family member of a Union citizen). It states who is lodging it and in what respect the decision is irregular, and it is drawn up in Slovak or accompanied by an official translation into Slovak. The appeal fee is 80 euros; it is reimbursed if the appeal is upheld. The refusal decision may be subject to judicial review.Exceptional extensionConditions and details
A short-stay visa may be extended only exceptionally, for no more than 90 days over any period of 180 days, if the foreign national cannot leave Slovak territory because of a natural disaster, humanitarian grounds or serious personal grounds, by the competent border and aliens police service. Tourism and family visits are not grounds for extension.Decision time limit under the visa facilitation agreementConditions and details
If the applicant's country has concluded a visa facilitation agreement with the Union (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus — implementation partially suspended —, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Georgia, Cape Verde, North Macedonia, Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine), a specific decision time limit may apply: under most of these agreements, ten calendar days, up to 30 days in exceptional cases. The application of the agreement with the Russian Federation has been suspended in full since 12 September 2022.
