Steps

Tourism (short stay)

  1. Check that the planned stay does not exceed 90 days over any 180-day period, within the validity limit of the visa.
  2. Check that Spain is the competent State: sole or main destination (duration or purpose of the stay); failing that, the State of the first external border crossed.
  3. Lodge the application no earlier than six months and, as a general rule, no later than 15 calendar days before the start of the trip.
  4. Make an appointment if the post requires it: as a general rule, the appointment takes place within two weeks of the appointment request.
  5. Appear in person when lodging the application for the recording of the ten fingerprints, unless fingerprints have been registered in the VIS less than 59 months before the new application; the photograph is scanned or taken at the time of lodging.
  6. Submit the form, passport and photograph and pay the fees: without these items or biometric data, the application is inadmissible.
  7. Wait for the decision: 15 calendar days from the lodging of an admissible application, up to 45 days in certain cases.
  8. Track the status of the visa application on the ministry's SuTRÁMITE service, using the data from the receipt issued by the post.
  9. At the border, present the passport, the visa and the requested supporting documents, and submit to the recording of biometric data.

Student visa

  1. Be admitted to a full-time program leading to a recognized degree at a recognized higher education institution in Spain (or an authorized center for post-compulsory secondary education), and have paid the enrollment fees.
  2. Assemble the file: passport, medical certificate, proof of financial resources, of health insurance, of admission and of payment of the enrollment fees, criminal record certificate if the stay exceeds six months, proof of payment of the fee.
  3. Submit the visa application in person (or through a representative) at the Spanish diplomatic or consular post with jurisdiction over the place of residence, at least two months before the start of the studies, and pay the visa fee.
  4. Wait for the decision: at most one month from the day after submission; without an express response within that period, the application may be considered rejected by administrative silence.
  5. Collect the granted visa within two months of the notification; failing that, the applicant is deemed to have waived it and the file is closed.
  6. If the stay exceeds six months: apply in person for the foreigner identity card (TIE) at the police station or police service of the place of residence, within one month of entry into Spain.

Work visa

  1. Finding an employer established in Spain: it is the employer who applies for the initial residence and salaried work authorization (worker over 16 years of age, a stay of more than 90 days and less than five years).
  2. The employer justifies the national employment situation: an occupation from the catalogue of hard-to-fill professions, demonstrated difficulty in filling the position, an international agreement (Chile, Peru) or a case under Article 40 of Law 4/2000.
  3. The employer submits the application online through the electronic portal of the Ministry of Territorial Policy (Mercurio procedure), with the signed contract and supporting documents; the fees are paid within ten working days.
  4. Wait for the decision: three months from the day after the application is entered in the register; without notification within this period, the application may be considered rejected by administrative silence.
  5. If the authorization is granted, apply for the visa in person within one month of the notification to the employer, at the Spanish consular post responsible for the place of residence: passport, criminal record certificate, medical certificate, proof of the visa fee.
  6. The post decides on the visa within one month; the worker collects the visa in person within the month following the notification, otherwise the worker is deemed to waive it and the file is closed.
  7. Enter Spain during the three months of validity of the visa, then be affiliated with Social Security within the three months following entry: the visa allows the person to stay while awaiting this registration.
  8. Within the month following registration with Social Security, apply in person for the foreigner's identity card (TIE) at the police station or police service of the place of residence.
