Steps

Tourist visa

  1. Verify that Belgium is the sole or main destination of the trip (State of the longest stay or of the main purpose); failing that, the application is not admissible.
  2. Identify the competent post: embassy or consulate of Belgium for the country of residence or, in certain countries, the Schengen State representing Belgium for the short stay.
  3. Submit the application at least 15 days before the start of the trip and at the earliest 6 months before.
  4. Complete the online application form on Visa-On-Web and sign it by hand.
  5. Make an appointment to submit the application, as a general rule with the external service provider (VFS Global or TLS Contact) that receives applications for the Belgian post.
  6. Prepare a complete application using the local harmonised checklist: documents supplied after submission are generally not taken into account.
  7. Follow the attendance instructions of the post or service provider. On a first application, appear in person for biometrics; fingerprints already taken may be reused under conditions for 59 months.
  8. Pay the visa fees at the time of submitting the application, as well as, where applicable, the service provider's service fees.
  9. Track the application with the Immigration Office's "Track a visa application" application, using the Visa-On-Web number or that of the Visa Application Center.
  10. Wait for the decision: generally 15 days when the post itself grants the visa, up to 45 days when the application is forwarded to the Immigration Office.
  11. On issuance, check on the visa sticker the period of validity, the permitted duration of stay, the number of entries and the territorial validity.

Student visa

  1. Obtain enrolment or admission to a recognised higher education institution and the certificate drawn up according to the standard model; for a first cycle in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, obtain the equivalence of the diploma.
  2. Gather the documents: passport, medical certificate, criminal record extract less than six months old, health insurance and proof of means of subsistence; have documents written in another language translated under oath.
  3. Pay the fee of 251 euros to the Immigration Office by bank transfer, with the surname, first name, nationality and date of birth in the reference, and keep proof of payment.
  4. Fill in the D visa application form, make an appointment with the office competent for the place of residence or its external service provider, and submit the application in person.
  5. On submission: give fingerprints and answer a questionnaire on the consistency of the study plan; receive an acknowledgement of receipt if the file is complete, otherwise complete the file within 30 days.
  6. Wait for the decision of the Immigration Office, taken within a period of 90 days from the date of the acknowledgement of receipt; submit the application at least 90 days before the start of the academic year.
  7. After arriving in Belgium, report to the municipal administration of the place of residence within 8 days to register in the registers and apply for the residence permit (card A).

Work visa

  1. The employer, or its authorised representative, submits the application for work and residence authorisation (single permit) through the federal single window; the worker provides his or her personal documents.
  2. Pay the fee of 152 euros to the Immigration Office and attach proof of payment to the file submitted to the competent Region.
  3. The Region verifies that the file is complete (15 days to complete it, otherwise inadmissible) then examines the work authorisation; the Immigration Office examines the residence authorisation.
  4. Await the decision: at most four months after the declaration of admissibility, possibly extended; in the absence of a negative decision, the work and residence authorisation is deemed granted.
  5. Receive the decision granting the single permit (annex 46 or 47), communicated to the worker, to the employer and to the diplomatic or consular post indicated in the application.
  6. Apply for the D visa at the post competent for the place of residence, presenting the valid passport and the decision granting the single permit; the post issues the visa if the decision matches that of the Immigration Office.
  7. After entry into Belgium, apply for registration in the foreigners register and for issuance of the single permit at the municipal administration within 8 working days; an A card is issued after the residence enquiry.
