Steps

Tourist visa

  1. Check whether a visa is required, then look on the "Applying for a Schengen visa" page for the submission location for the country of residence.
  2. Fill in your own online form to obtain a unique code, then print it, sign it and bring it to the appointment with the other documents.
  3. Gather all the documents from the “tourism” list.
  4. Submit the application at the appointment, in person in most cases, and sign there the declaration on the completeness of the file; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may request an interview or additional documents.
  5. Pay the visa fees when applying, and the service fees in the event of submission to VFS Global or TLScontact.
  6. Wait for the decision: indicative average of 18 to 21 calendar days as of 13 October 2026, upon receipt of the required file and the passport by the Dutch consular service; up to 45 days in certain cases.
  7. After the end-of-processing email, which does not state the decision, collect the passport or have it sent to you.
  8. Check the details on the sticker: country of validity, “From” and “Until” dates, duration of stay and number of entries.

Student visa

  1. Be enrolled in an accredited, full-time study programme at a university or HBO institution that is a sponsor recognised by the IND; only this institution can apply for the residence permit.
  2. Gather the documents requested by the institution, including proof of resources, and have foreign official documents legalised and translated.
  3. The institution submits the application for the MVV and the residence permit for studies to the IND at the same time, and pays the fee of 254 euros.
  4. Wait for the IND decision, which is taken within 60 days, with the possibility of extending this period; the institution receives it by letter and the application can be tracked in “My IND”.
  5. Make an appointment at the Dutch representation indicated in the file within three months following the decision, and submit the passport there for the MVV sticker to be affixed.
  6. Travel to the Netherlands within 90 days following the issuance of the MVV sticker and collect the residence permit at the IND desk, by appointment.
  7. If a tuberculosis test is planned, make an appointment at the public health service (GGD) within three months following receipt of the residence permit.

Work visa

  1. The employer checks the conditions: registration in the trade register (KvK) if required, job vacancy registered with the UWV, salary in accordance with the collective agreement, suitable housing.
  2. Collect the documents listed in the application form and have official foreign documents legalised and translated.
  3. The employer applies to the IND, in writing and by post, for the MVV and the single permit at the same time; the employee can also submit his own application at the Dutch embassy or consulate.
  4. Pay the fees of 423 euros according to the IND letter; if the employer pays them, he is not entitled to charge them to the employee.
  5. Wait for the IND decision, which is taken within 90 days, with the possibility of extending this period; the UWV gives the IND an opinion on the labour market within a statutory period of five weeks.
  6. Make an appointment at the Dutch representation indicated in the file within three months following the decision, and hand in the passport there for the placing of the MVV sticker.
  7. Travel to the Netherlands within 90 days following the issue of the MVV sticker and collect the single permit at the IND desk, by appointment.
  8. Start working only after receiving the residence permit and the supplementary document of the single permit; take the tuberculosis test if provided for, within three months.
