Where and how to apply

The consular portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Itamaraty is the body of the Brazilian government responsible for granting visas, and that this grant goes through Brazil's embassies, consulates general, consulates and vice-consulates abroad.

The same page states that a Brazilian visa is never granted on national territory: it is therefore not possible to obtain one at an airport, a port or an entry point on the Brazilian border.

The service record published on gov.br indicates a web channel and then the consular post. The ministry's e-consular system asks the applicant to select the country where they are, then the consulate of their jurisdiction; it states that if that consulate does not have the system, the user is directed to the consulate's page for the application instructions.

The page also states that Brazil applies a visa policy founded on the principle of reciprocity, and that an exemption may be granted by the Brazilian authorities only on a reciprocal basis, by bilateral understanding, subject to the cases provided for by decree 9.731/2019. No nationality is reproduced here: the nationality selector on this page shows the rule reviewed by VisaGuideline.

Steps in the procedure

  1. Consult the instructions specific to the consular post where the application will be filed: the service record refers to the e-consular system to identify the consulate of one's jurisdiction.
  2. Complete and send the electronic visa application form.
  3. Print, at the end of the form, the filing receipt and sign it.
  4. Gather the original documents matching the type of visa applied for.
  5. Pay the consular emoluments and keep the proof of payment, which is among the documents required.
  6. Present the file at the Brazilian consular post that will process the application.
  7. If the consulate of the jurisdiction does not have the e-consular system, follow the instructions published by that consulate, to which the system redirects.

Documents mentioned by the authority

The exact list depends on the visa type and on the situation; only the official page is authoritative.

Stated fees and processing times

According to the portal consulted on 2026-09-17, the service record "Obter visto para viajar ao Brasil" states, under costs: "Emolumentos Consulares de acordo com a moeda da jurisdição consular", that is, consular emoluments according to the currency of the consular jurisdiction. No amount is given in figures on the pages consulted.

According to the portal consulted on 2026-09-17, the same record states, for the duration of the procedure: "Não estimado ainda — A depender do Posto Consular", that is, a time not yet estimated and dependent on the consular post. No quantified time is stated on the pages consulted.

After the decision

The pages consulted define the visa as the document granted by Brazil's consular posts abroad which opens an expectation of entry and stay on the national territory, provided the conditions laid down by the legislation in force are met. The consular authority decides.

The portal states that the Federal Police is the body responsible for migration control at Brazil's borders, and that neither Itamaraty nor the Federal Police can authorize the entry of a foreign national without the appropriate visa.

The same page states that a foreign national already on the territory who wishes to extend their stay or obtain a residence authorization must approach the Ministry of Justice and the Federal Police, or the Ministry of Labor where the authorization concerns, for example, work or research.

Prepare my case

This method is the same for every destination. It does not list any document as an official requirement: only the authority’s source is authoritative.

  1. Describe your situation

Nationality, residence, purpose and dates. The checker tells covered routes apart from situations that are still unknown.

  2. Check at the source

Open the destination’s official source and compare it with your situation before starting a procedure.

  3. Track what is left to do

Your space keeps your answers and your declared checklist. A complete checklist does not announce a favorable decision.
