Choosing the procedure and place of submission
First consult the official conditions corresponding to your passport and purpose. If a visa must be obtained before departure, apply to a Mauritian diplomatic or consular representation; failing that, an Air Mauritius office. If these offices are absent, the application is sent to piovisa@govmu.org.
The multiple-entry visa concerns business travellers with interests in Mauritius and subject to a visa before departure. It may be granted to applicants in good faith, within the limits of 120 days per calendar year and 90 days per trip.
If your visa must be obtained before departure
- Check the purpose, your passport conditions and the instructions of the competent post.
- Complete and sign the form, then gather the documents suited to your situation, in English or French.
- Submit the file through the competent channel and respond to any requests for additional documents.
- The service recommends submitting at least 1 month before travel. Wait for the decision before departure.
Documents for an advance visa application
- Signed form, 2 recent passport photos and copy of passport data pages.
- If you reside outside your country of origin: copy of residence permit valid at least 3 months after the planned departure from Mauritius.
- Copy of return ticket reservation to the country of origin or residence; bank statement for the last month.
- Hotel, apartment or guesthouse reservation, with telephone and email of the accommodation.
- If sponsored: proof of sponsorship, copy of identity document or passport, residence permit of the foreign resident, proof of address and recent bank statement.
- Accompanying spouse or children: copies of their passports, marriage or birth certificate according to the relationship.
- Minor: parental consent, birth certificate and copies of parents' passports.
- Business: letter from the sponsor or local company. Workshop, event or conference: letter from the ministry or institution concerned. Social visa: letter from the Mauritian religious institution.
- Provide the necessary translations into English or French; the service may request additional documents.
These documents concern the advance visa application. The marriage visa and extension have their own lists.
Announced fees and timeframes
Visas, extensions and Premium visas are free. For a complete advance application, the service announces issuance within 12 working days as far as possible; this timeframe is not guaranteed. It recommends submitting at least 1 month before travel.
Extending the stay
The extension application requires personal appearance. Prepare the signed form, passport data page and arrival stamp, ticket reservation, bank statements for the last 3 months and confirmed accommodation. The confirmed ticket must be presented after approval.
With a local sponsor: letter stating their name, address, telephone, profession and your relationship; identity document or passport, utility bill, lease if applicable and bank statements for the last 3 months. Additional documents are provided for business and minors; consult the dedicated list. The extension is free.
Before boarding and on arrival
Plan for an accepted travel document valid beyond the stay, a valid return ticket, the right to return to your country of origin or residence, sufficient resources and confirmed or sponsored accommodation. A visa does not guarantee admission; comply with the duration granted at entry.
Unrecognised passports, travel documents, stateless persons and refugees require an advance visa application. Exception indicated by the authority: holders of a Taiwan passport may receive 60 days visa on arrival.
Complete the free health declaration before travel and keep the proof requested at boarding. To work, reside or study, check the authorisations specific to the project: a tourist stay is not sufficient.
For a civil marriage with a Mauritian citizen, nationals of countries in the ninth, tenth and eleventh schedules of the passport regulations must obtain the marriage visa before travel. Consult the specific documents for this procedure.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Mauritius?
It depends on your passport and purpose: exemption, visa on arrival or advance visa. Consult the official conditions corresponding to your situation before choosing the procedure.
How long can a tourist stay last?
The authority may grant up to 6 months per calendar year, case by case. This maximum is not automatic: the duration decided on arrival must be complied with.
How much does the visa cost and when should I apply?
The visa is free. For an application before departure, the service recommends at least 1 month in advance and announces 12 working days after receipt of a complete file, as far as possible.
What is the Premium visa for?
It allows a long stay of 1 year, renewable, as a tourist, retiree or professional, including remote work. It is free; check the conditions with the Economic Development Board via the official page.
Do I need to complete a health form?
Yes, complete the health declaration before travel and keep the proof for boarding. This official form is free.
Can a stay be extended?
A separate, free application is provided, with personal appearance and documents specific to the extension. A submitted file does not replace approval: comply with the authorised period.
