At the appointment, the applicant signs a document acknowledging that all documents are necessary for processing, that an incomplete application may be rejected and that the visa fees are then not refunded.Submit in the country of residenceConditions and details
The application is normally submitted in the country of residence. Submitting elsewhere is possible only in the cases provided for: no place of submission in the country of residence, absence from that country for more than 6 months (with proof), or travel to the Netherlands unforeseen at the time of departure. The appointment waiting time, the distance or the nationality do not allow submission elsewhere.Do not follow up on the status of the applicationConditions and details
As of 13 October 2026, NetherlandsWorldwide shows an average processing time of 18 to 21 calendar days for the Schengen visa. It starts upon receipt of the required file and the passport by the Dutch consular organisation; it may reach 45 days in certain cases. In high season, it may be longer. Use the online tracking: NetherlandsWorldwide, the embassy and the service providers ask not to be contacted about the status of the application.Count the days spent in the Schengen areaConditions and details
With a double-entry or multiple-entry visa, the total duration of stay in the Schengen area may not exceed 90 days over a period of 180 days, whether these days are consecutive or spread over several trips. It is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands that determines, according to the travel itinerary, the period of validity, the duration and the number of entries of the visa.Fee exemptions and service feesConditions and details
Certain persons do not pay the visa fees, in particular pupils and students travelling for their studies and their accompanying teachers, researchers travelling for research or for a scientific seminar or conference, or applicants covered by the Schengen visa facilitation. The service fees of VFS Global or TLScontact remain due even in the event of an exemption. This free facilitation is subject to conditions, including those for family members covered by free movement in the EU or EEA. It does not mean that every reduced nationality-based fee is a fee exemption. In case of refusalConditions and details
An objection may be lodged with the IND within four weeks of the date of the decision, in writing or by an authorised person. A new application is also possible, but the visa fees must be paid again. The fees and service fees of the refused application are not refunded.Legalisation of the host's signatureConditions and details
When the visitor needs a visa, the host's signature on the private accommodation declaration must be legalised at a Dutch municipality, and the visa application must be submitted within 6 months of the legalisation.
Student visa
Progress in studiesConditions and details
Each year, the student must obtain at least 50% of the credits of the academic year. The institution assesses the progress; if it is insufficient, it checks whether the student has good reasons within the meaning of the Higher Education Act (WHW). Without a good reason, it must report this to the IND, which then examines whether the conditions of the residence permit are still met.Preparatory periodConditions and details
If the institution imposes additional courses or a language test for admission, or preparation for a master's after the bachelor's (pre-master), the residence permit for study also grants the right to stay during a preparatory period, usually of one year. If the student subsequently does not meet the admission conditions, the institution deregisters them with the IND.Working during studiesConditions and details
The residence permit bears the endorsement Work permit required for additional work, other work as an employee not permitted. The student may work as an employee if their employer has a work permit (TWV) for them, within the limit of 16 hours per week or full-time in June, July and August. They may also work as a self-employed person, without a TWV, by registering with the chamber of commerce (KvK) and paying taxes. An internship provided for by the study programme does not require a TWV.Duration and type of residence permitConditions and details
The IND issues the residence permit for no more than 5 years. The permit for study is valid for three months longer than the duration of the studies, including the preparatory period, and remains valid as long as the conditions are met. It is a temporary regular residence permit of type I.Family membersConditions and details
The institution may also apply for a residence permit for the student's family members; if the family travels with the student, the institution must be asked to submit all applications at the same time. The institution is only responsible for the student: the student is responsible for their relatives' lawful stay. A family member is not allowed to work in the Netherlands, and both the student and their relative must meet the conditions specific to this residence permit. After the studiesConditions and details
Once the studies are completed, one may apply for another residence permit: to look for a job (orientation year), to work as a highly skilled migrant (with a lower income threshold) or to start an innovative enterprise (start-up).Changing institutionConditions and details
During the studies, one may transfer to another institution without losing one's residence permit. The new institution must be a recognised sponsor, and both the student and the new institution must inform the IND of the change.Students exempt from MVV: residence permit without a stickerConditions and details
Nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, the Vatican, the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, Switzerland or an EU or EEA state do not need an MVV. The MVV exemption does not exempt them from the residence permit (except for EU, EEA and Swiss nationals), which they apply for according to another procedure, without a sticker. This MVV entry procedure is therefore not intended for them.Mobility within the EU during the studiesConditions and details
With a Dutch residence permit for studies, one may study in other EU countries for no more than 360 days (intra-EU mobility, Directive (EU) 2016/801), if the studies abroad are part of a programme providing for mobility measures or of an agreement between two or more higher education institutions. An internship alone does not fall within this framework. The Dutch institution must inform the IND in time. Without intra-EU mobility, one may study abroad for no more than 12 consecutive months, with sufficient progress in the studies.MVV sticker processing time and fees at the representationConditions and details
The MVV sticker may take up to 10 working days after the passport is submitted at the representation, with some representations being faster. The MVV and residence permit fees are paid to the IND, not to the Dutch embassy or consulate-general.- Refusal: objectionIn the event of a negative decision, the student obtains neither an MVV nor a residence permit for studies; he may lodge an objection against this decision.
Work visa
Less than three months or more than three monthsConditions and details
For work of less than three months in the Netherlands, the employer applies for a work permit from the UWV. For work of more than three months, a residence permit is also required: the employer applies to the IND for a combined residence and work permit, the single permit (GVVA). The work permit is issued to the employer, who must give a copy to the employee; the single permit is issued to the employee in person at an IND desk.Conditions to be met by the employerConditions and details
The employer must be registered in the commercial register of the chamber of commerce (KvK) when the commercial register act requires it. He must first have sought an employee in the Netherlands and in the EU or EEA countries, by reporting the job vacancy to a UWV employers' service point. He pays a normal salary according to the applicable collective agreement and ensures suitable accommodation.Salary threshold in 2026Conditions and details
For ordinary salaried employment, the gross monthly salary within the meaning of social security ("SV salary") must be at least 2 337,00 euros excluding holiday allowance, or 2 523,96 euros including holiday allowance, from 1 July to 31 December 2026. The amounts change regularly. The highly skilled worker, the European blue card and other statuses have other thresholds, not described here.Working with the single permitConditions and details
The single permit consists of a residence permit bearing the endorsement "Arbeid toegestaan conform aanvullend document" ("work permitted according to the supplementary document") and a supplementary document, which states for which employer and under which conditions the employee may work; the employer receives a copy of it. The employee cannot start working before he has received both documents. After five years of work in the Netherlands, a work permit is no longer necessary: the employee can apply for the endorsement "arbeid vrij toegestaan" (free to work).Duration of the single permit and loss of employmentConditions and details
The single permit is valid for 3 years at most, or 5 years at most for someone who has already had a valid work residence permit for five years. In the event of loss of employment, the employee has 3 months to find another one; for a loss of employment from 22 May 2026 and a permit held for two years or more, he has 6 months at most. This period cannot exceed the validity of the permit, and if it ends without registration by a new employer, the IND may withdraw the residence permit.Changing employerConditions and details
In the event of a change of employer, the former employer must inform the IND and deregister the employee, who himself verifies with the former employer that this deregistration has taken place. The new employer must apply for a new residence permit.Jobs that also fall under the single permit, and cases without a single permitConditions and details
The single permit also applies to certain jobs: minister of religion, monk, nun or missionary, supply of goods by or for a foreign undertaking (up to one year), employee of an international non-profit organisation, art and culture, intra-corporate transfer. For those who cannot apply for a single permit, or no longer need a work permit after five consecutive years of work, it is a residence permit "paid employment" (without a single permit) that the employer or the employee applies for.Nationals exempt from the MVV: application without a stickerConditions and details
Nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, the Vatican, the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, Switzerland or an EU or EEA state do not need an MVV. Except for EU, EEA and Swiss nationals, these applicants still need the single permit or a residence permit to work, under a procedure without a sticker. This MVV entry procedure is therefore not intended for them.Application submitted by the employee himself from abroadConditions and details
The employee who does not have a sponsor employer submitting on his behalf can himself apply for the MVV and the residence permit from abroad. He makes an appointment at the Dutch embassy or consulate in his country of origin or of continuous residence (the country where he can stay for more than three months). He must appear there with the completed form, his photograph and a valid passport; the embassy registers the application and records signature and fingerprints, then he sends the file to the IND and pays the fees within three weeks of the date recorded by the embassy. Children under 12 go to the embassy with a legal representative.MVV sticker processing time and fees at the representationConditions and details
The MVV sticker may take up to 10 working days after submission of the passport at the representation, some representations being faster. The MVV and residence permit fees are paid to the IND, not to the Dutch embassy or consulate-general.- Refusal: objectionIn the event of a negative decision, the employee obtains neither an MVV nor a single permit; he can lodge an objection against that decision.
