Steps

Tourist visa

  1. Choose the Schengen short-stay visa, intended for stays of 90 days or less per 180-day period, in particular for tourism.
  2. Identify, on the "Onde deve solicitar visto" page, the Portuguese consular post, the representation of another Schengen State or the external provider that receives applications in the country concerned.
  3. Fill in and sign the application form, then gather the documents on the "Schengen para efeitos de curta duração" list.
  4. Submit the originals and their copies to the competent consulate. An appointment may be required; as a general rule it must take place within two weeks of the request, with exceptions in urgent cases.
  5. Follow the consulate's instructions for personal presence and biometric data: data less than 59 months old may be reused and a waiver applies where it is impossible to provide fingerprints.
  6. Pay the applicable fees, unless exempt. Their payment covers the processing of the application and does not guarantee that the visa will be issued.
  7. Wait for the decision: 15 calendar days from the submission of an admissible application, up to 45 days in certain cases, and 7 additional days when the application is subject to prior consultation.
  8. When collecting the passport, always check the entries on the visa sticker.

Student visa

  1. Meet the admission conditions or be accepted into higher education; prepare the proof of admission and resources taking into account the exemptions provided for.
  2. Identify on the page "Onde deve solicitar visto" the consular post of Portugal, or the external service provider, competent according to nationality or country of residence.
  3. Download, fill in and sign the national visa application form, then gather the documents in the "Residência" list.
  4. Apply for the visa at the competent consular post or at the external service provider it designates.
  5. Pay the national visa processing fee of 110 euros, unless an exemption applies.
  6. Wait for the decision: the period is 60 days for a residence visa, except for shorter periods provided for by law.
  7. If the visa is granted: it is valid for two entries and four months, and a residence pre-authorisation is issued with it (tax, social security and health numbers allocated provisionally).
  8. After entry into Portugal, apply to AIMA for the student permit by appointment, with form and documents. Use the electronic platform only if it is available for your procedure.
  9. Receive the student permit: in principle three years, or the duration of the programme if it is shorter; particular durations apply to mobility programmes.

Work visa

  1. Obtain an employment contract or a promise of an employment contract in Portugal or, with recognized and appropriate qualifications, an individualized expression of interest from an employer.
  2. Search for a job offer: IEFP maintains a public system of job offers, and an employer established in Portugal may publish an offer there intended for non-resident third-country nationals (offers not processed by IEFP).
  3. If the profession is regulated in Portugal, obtain proof of authorisation to practise it.
  4. Identify on the page "Onde deve solicitar visto" the consular post of Portugal, or the external service provider, competent according to nationality or country of residence.
  5. Download, fill in and sign the national visa application form, then gather the documents in the "Residência" list.
  6. Apply for the visa at the competent consular post or at the external service provider it designates.
  7. Pay the national visa processing fee of 110 euros, unless an exemption applies.
  8. Wait for the decision: the period is 60 days for a residence visa, except for shorter periods provided for by law.
  9. If the visa is granted: it is valid for two entries and four months, and a residence pre-authorisation is issued with it (tax, social security and health numbers allocated provisionally).
  10. After entering Portugal, apply to AIMA, by appointment, for the residence permit for salaried activity: passport, valid visa, employer's attestation, address, tax and social security registrations.
  11. Receive the residence permit: valid for two years, renewable for successive periods of three years.
