United States nationals: recent passport-sized identity photographConditions and details
United States nationals coming for tourism must obtain a multiple-entry visa, even for a single entry. The guidelines cite among its documents a recent passport-sized photograph, a copy of the passport identity page, the return ticket and the USD 100 fee, without specifying which of these are requested at the arrival counter.

Check that one's nationality appears in the section 7 list of the guidelines (online visa or visa on arrival) and not in the section 8 list (visa to be obtained in advance).
Before departure, check that the passport is valid for at least six months and has a blank visa page, and carry the return ticket.
At the official point of entry, obtain the visa on arrival: ordinary visa (50 USD) or, for United States nationals, multiple-entry visa (100 USD).
Present the return ticket to the immigration officer at the point of entry.

United States nationals: multiple-entry visaConditions and details
United States nationals cannot obtain the ordinary visa: they must apply for the multiple-entry visa, even for a single entry. This visa is valid for up to twelve months, with a stay of three months (90 days) at most per visit.
Mainland Tanzania and ZanzibarThe same visa allows visiting mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar; the application indicates the first destination.
Return after a trip in East AfricaThe holder of an ordinary visa who travels to another East African country after arrival may return to Tanzania with the same visa as long as it is valid.
Neither work nor business activityThe holder of an ordinary visa is not authorized to work or to carry out a business activity.
