Valid passport or other valid travel documentConditions and details
The passport or travel document must establish the applicant's identity and nationality. If an appointment at the visa application centre is required, it is brought and collected the same day; the nearest centre may be in a country other than the country of residence.Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number, issued by the institutionConditions and details
An unconditional offer of a place on a course at an institution holding a student sponsor licence is required. Once the offer is made, the institution sends a reference number, the CAS, which is essential before applying for the visa and must be entered in the application. The application must be submitted within 6 months of receiving the CAS.Proof of identity: "UK Immigration: ID Check" app (UKVI account) or fingerprints and photograph taken at a visa application centreConditions and details
The online application includes a proof of identity. Depending on the country of origin and the type of passport, one either scans one's identity document with the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app, which also creates or opens a UKVI account, or has one's fingerprints and photograph taken at a visa application centre. The online application indicates which of these two routes applies.Payment of the Immigration Health Surcharge with the applicationConditions and details
The health surcharge is paid in the online application, for the applicant and each person accompanying them: 776 GBP per year for a student. For a partial duration: no surcharge for 6 months or less from outside the United Kingdom; a full year for more than 6 months and less than one year; more than one year and 18 months or less: the year plus half; more than 18 months and less than 2 years: two full years. If the payment is incomplete, UKVI sends a reminder email; the application is refused if the full amount is not paid within 7 working days following that email for an application made from outside the United Kingdom.
Depending on your situation
Proof of sufficient funds for the course and for living in the United Kingdom, unless exceptions applyConditions and details
You must have enough to pay for the course for one academic year (up to 9 months), the amount stated on the CAS, and enough to live on: 1 529 GBP per month for a course in London, 1 171 GBP per month elsewhere, for up to 9 months, with an additional amount for each family member who accompanies you. These monthly maintenance amounts apply to applications submitted before 30 November 2026. For an application submitted from 30 November 2026, they rise to 1 570 GBP in London and 1 203 GBP elsewhere, still for up to 9 months. The funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the end of this period must fall within the 31 days before the application. A student loan or financial sponsorship is proved by a document from the organisation concerned. Proof of maintenance is not required from a person who has lived in the United Kingdom with a visa for at least 12 months, nor from a full-time student union sabbatical officer. Nationals of around sixty countries and territories on the “differential evidence requirement” list (published on the page) and British nationals (overseas) do not have to provide it, but UKVI may request it after submission.Proof of knowledge of English: UK qualification or one taught in English, or a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved providerConditions and details
It is generally necessary to prove that one speaks, reads, writes and understands English: a level equivalent to CEFR B2 for a course at degree level or above, B1 below that. A higher education institution may assess the B2 level itself for a course at degree level or above. The proof may be a UK school qualification started before age 18 (GCSE, A level, certain Scottish levels), a degree-level qualification taught in English awarded by a UK institution, or, for a foreign qualification taught in English, an Ecctis assessment code, or a SELT test. Exempt are nationals (or graduates of a qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree obtained in) Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British overseas territories, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as nationals of Canada, those coming for a study abroad programme as part of a US degree and those who have already proven their level in a previous visa application.ATAS certificate (Academic Technology Approval Scheme), if the course and nationality require itConditions and details
The ATAS certificate may be required to study or conduct research on sensitive subjects at RQF level 7 or above (master's and above): the application page asks for it if the course and the student's nationality require it.Tuberculosis test certificate, if coming for 6 months or more after living in a listed countryConditions and details
The test is required if you are coming to the United Kingdom for 6 months or more, have lived for 6 months or more in one of the countries listed by the government, and were living there (or in another listed country) in the last 6 months. It consists of a chest X-ray, possibly supplemented by a sputum sample. If the test is negative, the certificate issued is valid for 6 months from the X-ray; it is attached to the application. Accredited diplomats, UK residents returning after an absence of no more than 2 years, and people coming under a scheme for Ukrainians do not need it.Written consent from the financial sponsor, if the course fees and living costs have been funded by a sponsor in the last 12 monthsConditions and details
If one has received financial sponsorship for the course fees and living costs in the last 12 months, the financial sponsor's written consent must be provided with the application.
Work visa
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number, issued by the approved employerConditions and details
The CoS is an electronic record, not a paper document: the employer (the sponsor) checks that the employee meets the requirements, then gives it to them with a reference number needed for the application. You must have a confirmed job offer before applying for the visa. The CoS must have been issued no more than 3 months before the application. Where the CoS is linked to a Sponsorship Reference Number, this limit is 90 days, not counting the days during which a change requested by the sponsor in Sponsor a Worker is being considered. The application cannot be submitted more than 3 months before the job start date stated on the CoS. You can ask the employer for a copy if you do not have it.Job title, annual salary, 4-digit occupation code, employer name and sponsor licence numberConditions and details
The application asks for the job title and annual salary, the occupation code for the job, the employer name and their sponsor licence number; this information appears on the certificate of sponsorship. The job must be on the list of eligible occupations and paid at least the required minimum salary.Valid passport or other document proving identity and nationalityConditions and details
You need a valid passport, or another document that proves identity and nationality. If an appointment is needed at the visa application centre, you take your passport there and collect it the same day.Proof of identity: “UK Immigration: ID Check” app (UKVI account) or fingerprints and photo taken at a visa application centreConditions and details
The online application includes proof of identity. Depending on the country of origin and the type of passport, you scan your identity document with the “UK Immigration: ID Check” app, which also creates or opens a UKVI account, or you have your fingerprints and photo taken at a visa application centre, which may be in another country. The online application states which of these two routes applies; you should allow extra time if an appointment is needed.Payment of the Immigration Health Surcharge, in general 1 035 GBP per year of stayConditions and details
The health surcharge is paid in the online application, for each year of stay, by the applicant and by each member of their family: in general 1 035 GBP per year. For a partial period, there is no surcharge for 6 months or less from outside the United Kingdom; a full year is due for more than 6 months and less than a year; for more than a year and 18 months or less, the year plus half; for more than 18 months and less than 2 years, two full years. Certain health and care jobs fall under the Health and Care Worker visa, without a surcharge.
Depending on your situation
Proof of English at CEFR level B2: a UK qualification or one taught in English, or a Secure English Language Test (SELT)Conditions and details
You generally need to prove that you speak, read, write and understand English, at least at CEFR level B2. The proof can be a UK school qualification started before age 18 (GCSE, A level, certain Scottish levels), a bachelor degree taught in English awarded by a UK institution, an Ecctis assessment code for a foreign qualification taught in English, or a SELT from an approved provider. A person who held the visa before 8 January 2026 and is extending or updating it needs level B1 without new proof; a person switching from another visa generally needs level B2. A person switching from a Health and Care Worker visa does not have to provide new proof of English. Exempt are nationals of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British overseas territories, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States. A doctor, dentist, nurse, midwife or vet already assessed by their professional body does not have to retake a test.Proof of 1 270 GBP in savings available for at least 28 days, unless the employer covers the costs of the first monthConditions and details
You must have at least 1 270 GBP in a bank account to prove that you can support yourself in the United Kingdom. This sum must have been available for at least 28 consecutive days, with day 28 falling within the 31 days before the application. Proof is generally required, unless an application to extend or remain is submitted by a person present in the United Kingdom with permission for at least 12 months, or unless their A-rated sponsor certifies that it will if needed provide their maintenance and accommodation until the end of the first month of employment, to an amount of at least 1 270 GBP: the certificate of sponsorship must then confirm this in the “sponsor certifies maintenance” section of the additional data. Spouses and children must also prove their own funds.Tuberculosis test certificate, if coming from a listed countryConditions and details
The test is required if you are coming to the United Kingdom for 6 months or more, you have lived for 6 months or more in one of the countries listed by the government and you were living there (or in another listed country) in the last 6 months. It consists of a chest X-ray; the certificate issued after a negative test is valid for 6 months from the X-ray and is included with the application. Accredited diplomats, returning UK residents absent for at most 2 years and people coming through a scheme for Ukrainians do not need it.Criminal record certificate, for certain education, health, therapy or social services jobs, if applying from outside the United KingdomConditions and details
A criminal record certificate is required from a person applying from outside the United Kingdom who will work in education (teachers, education advisers, inspectors, assistants), health (nurses, doctors, paramedics, pharmacists, dentists), therapy (psychologists, speech and language therapists, counsellors) or social services (social workers, probation officers). Rule SW 16.1 covers every country where the applicant was present for 12 months or more, continuously or in total, during the 10 years before the application, counting only periods from age 18. This 12-month threshold also applies from age 28. Under SW 16.2, a satisfactory explanation may be accepted where it is not reasonably possible to obtain a certificate from some or all of the authorities concerned.- ATAS certificate (Academic Technology Approval Scheme), if the employer states that it is requiredA valid ATAS certificate is required if the employer states it because the job involves research on a sensitive subject at PhD level or above.
UK doctoral degree, or Ecctis reference number for a qualification obtained outside the United KingdomConditions and details
To benefit from a reduced minimum salary thanks to a PhD relevant to the job, you must provide the UK doctoral degree, or a unique Ecctis reference number where the qualification comes from abroad: the application is then made to Ecctis, which confirms equivalence with a UK doctoral degree.- Certified translation of documents that are neither in English nor in WelshIf the documents provided are not written in English or Welsh, a certified translation is also required.

Steps
Visitor visa
- Check that the purpose (tourism, visit to family or friends) is among the activities permitted for the standard visitor and that the eligibility conditions are met.
- Check, according to nationality, whether a visa is required.
- Submit the application online before the trip, at the earliest 3 months before; the form can be saved and completed later.
- Pay the fees as part of the online application.
- Book, during the application, an appointment at a visa application centre and attend it within 240 days following submission.
- At the appointment: prove one's identity, have fingerprints and photo taken, hand over the documents; the passport is returned the same day.
- Wait for the decision, usually within 3 weeks, communicated by email from the Home Office with the steps to follow.
- In the event of approval, access the eVisa from a UKVI account (to be created if necessary).
- Before departure, check that the UKVI account and the eVisa data are correct; do not travel before approval.
- At the border, present the passport (and the visa); the officer usually asks the reason for the visit.
Student visa
- Obtain an unconditional offer from an institution holding a student sponsor licence and receive its CAS number.
- Prove knowledge of English (qualification or secure English language test), unless exempt.
- Gather evidence of funds, the tuberculosis certificate if required and, depending on the course and nationality, the ATAS certificate.
- Submit the application online, no earlier than 6 months before the start of the course and within 6 months of receiving the CAS; pay the fee and the health surcharge.
- Prove identity: the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app or an appointment at the visa application centre for fingerprints and photo.
- Wait for the decision, generally within 3 weeks from outside the United Kingdom; a payment sometimes allows a faster decision.
- If the application is accepted, access the eVisa, online proof of immigration status, from a UKVI account to be created if needed.
- Travel from the start date shown on the visa: at most 1 week before a course of 6 months or less, 1 month before a course of more than 6 months.
- At the border, present your passport and visa: the officer generally asks the reason for the visit, and fingerprints may be compared with those of the eVisa.
- During the stay, comply with the visa conditions; they are shown with the decision, and violating them may prevent return.
Work visa
- Obtain a confirmed job offer from a UK employer approved by the Home Office, for a position on the list of eligible jobs.
- Check with the employer the 4-digit occupation code, the eligibility of the position and the minimum salary required (41 700 GBP or the going rate for the position if it is higher, except in cases of reduced salary).
- The employer issues the certificate of sponsorship (CoS), an electronic record with a reference number needed for the visa application.
- Prove one's level of English (B2) unless exempt, then gather the other documents: available funds, tuberculosis test, criminal record certificate, certified translations.
- Submit the application online no earlier than 3 months before the start of work, with a CoS issued no more than 3 months earlier (or 90 days in the case of a Sponsorship Reference Number, excluding any period of change being examined); pay the fees and the health surcharge.

Examples cited by the official guide: bank statements indicating the origin of the funds, building society passbooks, proof of income such as a letter from the employer (date of hire, salary, position, contact details). Non-exhaustive list of documents that one "may want" to provide.- Copies of previous passports showing travel to other countriesDocument that the official guide cites among those that one may want to provide to present one's situation.
- Proof of lawful residence if the applicant is not a national of the country of application or their right to reside there is not recorded in their passportUseful if the applicant does not have the nationality of the country where they submit their application, or if their right to reside there does not appear in their passport.
- Do not book the trip too earlyThe government advises not to book the trip before having the decision: UKVI does not refund any travel costs in the event of refusal or delay.
One application per personConditions and details
As a family, each person has their own application, pays their own fees and attends their own appointment. One may submit on behalf of one's partner and child if they cannot do it themselves.Documents of little useConditions and details
The official guide considers of little use in particular: bank statements or letters more than one year old, credit card statements, driving licence, hotel bookings, plane tickets (except transit), travel insurance, personal photos, business cards. No document guarantees that the visa will be granted.Visitor conditionsConditions and details
One must be able to show that one will leave the United Kingdom at the end of the visit, that one can support oneself and pay for the return, and that one will not live in the United Kingdom through frequent or successive visits. Recourse to public funds is prohibited. Work is prohibited except activities expressly permitted by the rules applicable to visitors, under their conditions. Marrying, forming a civil partnership or giving notice of one falls in principle under the Marriage/Civil Partnership Visitor route, subject to the exceptions provided for by the rules. This guide concerns tourism and visits to family or friends; another purpose must be checked in its category.Long-term visaConditions and details
A regular visitor may choose a 2, 5 or 10 year visa, with 6 months at most per visit. UKVI may grant a shorter duration, without refund, and cancel the visa if the history shows repeated prolonged stays.Stay limited to the duration statedConditions and details
Whatever the validity of the visa (6 months, 2, 5 or 10 years), each stay must not exceed the authorised duration stated on the visa, in general six months. The general rule is expressed in months; 181 days is not a fixed official maximum. The 181-day limit of the VisaGuideline checker defines its current coverage and does not replace the permission to stay granted.- Chinese tour groupsA Chinese national who travels in an organised group follows another procedure (ADS visa).
- Residents of IrelandLiving in Ireland does not exempt one from the visa: the national of a country subject to a visa must apply for it before travelling to the United Kingdom.
Change, cancel, appealConditions and details
To change a submitted application, contact UKVI; a cancellation is refunded only if processing has not begun. In the event of refusal, the letter states whether there is a right to an administrative review or to an appeal.
Student visa
Courses accepted with this visaConditions and details
The Student visa covers a full-time course leading to a qualification below degree level (RQF 3, 4 or 5) with at least 15 hours per week of organised daytime study; a full-time course at degree level or above (RQF 6, 7 or 8), including an equivalent course delivered as part of a longer course abroad; a part-time course above degree level (RQF 7 or above); or an English language course at level B2 or above. You can also apply for this visa for a full-time elected post as a student union sabbatical officer. Qualification levels are different in Scotland. The rules applicable to applications submitted from 8 October 2026 also allow a course followed as part of Erasmus+ at an institution holding a student sponsor licence and participating in the programme: RQF level 2 or above in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, or SCQF 5 or above in Scotland. Check the appropriate route with the Erasmus+ organisation and the institution; the institution must issue the required CAS.When to applyConditions and details
From outside the United Kingdom, the application can be submitted no earlier than 6 months before the start of the course, and the CAS must have been received less than 6 months before the application. UKVI generally gives a decision within 3 weeks; a payment can sometimes speed up the decision, which the application indicates at submission.Length of stayConditions and details
The length of stay depends on the course and on studies already undertaken in the United Kingdom. For studies undertaken from age 18, the rules generally limit authorisations for courses below degree level to 2 years, and those for courses at degree level to 5 years. The 5-year cap does not apply to courses above degree level. Precise exceptions concern in particular certain maritime, architecture, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, music and law courses; consult conditions ST 19 of Appendix Student. An extension or a change of visa from within the United Kingdom remains subject to the conditions of the relevant process.Other visas for studyingConditions and details
A course of 6 months or less followed without a student sponsor but at an accredited institution falls under the visitor visa; an English language course of more than 6 months and no more than 11 months without a sponsor but at an accredited institution falls under the short-term student visa. A young person aged 16 or 17 who wants to study at an independent school may be entitled to the Child Student visa. The process described here is that of the Student visa for an adult, with a sponsor holding a licence.Working with a Student visaConditions and details
You can sometimes work: the number of hours depends on the studies followed and the period (during or outside teaching periods). You can also work as a student union sabbatical officer. You cannot claim most public funds or the right to a pension, nor work in certain jobs (for example professional sportsperson or coach), nor be self-employed. Study at a State School or an Academy is normally prohibited, with the exceptions in ST 27.7: a voluntary grammar school with boarding in Northern Ireland; a sponsor institution that becomes a State School or Academy during the authorisation, only to finish the course for which the CAS was already assigned; or an Erasmus+ course at a sponsor institution participating in the programme. The Erasmus+ exception applies to applications submitted from 8 October 2026. The visa granted states what is permitted.Spouse and childrenConditions and details
A student can sometimes bring their partner and dependent children to the United Kingdom. The official page distinguishes students funded by a government for a course of more than 6 months and full-time students on a postgraduate course of at least 9 months. For a postgraduate course starting from 1 January 2024, it must be a doctorate or a higher degree based on research. A taught master's is therefore not sufficient on its own in this second case. The conditions specific to the partner or child remain to be checked on GOV.UK. Each person joining the student pays the visa fee and the health surcharge. After study: Graduate visaConditions and details
After successfully completing the course, a Graduate visa can be applied for to stay in the United Kingdom: 2 years if the application is submitted no later than 31 December 2026, 18 months if it is submitted from 1 January 2027, and 3 years after a doctorate.Nationals not covered by this procedureConditions and details
Under the immigration rules in force, a person cannot apply for the Student visa as a national of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Burma (Myanmar) or Sudan. Irish citizens do not need permission to enter or stay in the United Kingdom, except in particular cases, and British citizens do not need entry permission: this procedure is therefore not intended for them.Complex application, amendment, withdrawalConditions and details
UKVI may contact the applicant if the application is complex, for example because the documents must be verified, an interview is necessary, or because of the personal situation (a criminal conviction, for example). To amend a submitted application, UKVI must be contacted. Withdrawal of the application can be requested; the fee is refunded only if UKVI has not started processing. At the borderConditions and details
At the border, the passport and any visa are checked and the officer generally asks the reason for the visit. If entry is refused, the traveller is informed in writing, with the reasons, the possibility of appeal and the date of removal from the United Kingdom. They may sometimes be admitted temporarily, generally for a week at most.
Work visa
Eligibility conditionsConditions and details
To obtain this visa, you must work for a British employer approved by the Home Office, have a certificate of sponsorship from that employer, occupy a position on the list of eligible professions and be paid at least the minimum salary which depends on the type of work and the date of obtaining the certificate. A confirmed job offer is required before the application. The employer must also comply with the legal minimum wage and the rules on working hours, failing which the application is refused.Minimum salary and cases of reduced salaryConditions and details
The minimum salary is the higher of 41 700 GBP per year and the going rate for the occupation (specific to each occupation code). It may be lower: at least 33 400 GBP with 70 % to 90 % of the going rate for those under 26, students or recent graduates, people in professional training, holders of a doctorate relevant to the job (37 500 GBP at least excluding scientific disciplines) or postdoctoral researchers; 33 400 GBP for a job on the list of jobs with a reduced salary, at least at the standard going rate. For those under 26, students or recent graduates, people in professional training and postdoctoral researchers at 70 %, the total stay cannot exceed 4 years. Different rules apply to health and education jobs and to prison officers who extend or change visa (31 300 GBP at least).“Medium skilled” jobsConditions and details
A position classified as “higher skilled” allows you to apply for this visa if the other conditions are met. A position classified as “medium skilled” allows the application only if it appears on the list of jobs with a reduced salary or on the temporary shortage list, or for a prison officer extending or switching their visa; a holder whose first certificate of sponsorship dates from before 22 July 2025 may also extend their visa. The occupation code must be checked in the official table of eligible jobs and its local rules for the relevant nation within the United Kingdom.Employer not yet approvedConditions and details
If the employer is not yet approved, they can apply for a sponsor licence if they are eligible; they pay a fee (611 GBP for small businesses and charities, 1 682 GBP for medium and large organisations) and the licence application generally takes about 8 weeks. Care workers and senior care workers who work in England must also have an employer registered with the Care Quality Commission.Total cost to plan forConditions and details
The applicant, their spouse and their children each pay the application fee and the health surcharge for each year of stay, and must prove that they have sufficient savings. Example given by the government: 2 years for a job outside the list of jobs with a reduced salary, that is 819 GBP in fees and 1 035 GBP per year of stay for the health surcharge, 2 889 GBP in total, plus 1 270 GBP in savings to prove if the employer does not cover these costs.- Work in health or careA doctor, a nurse or a health or adult care worker may be eligible for the Health and Care Worker visa, which is cheaper, without an annual health surcharge.
Duration of the visa, extension and permanent settlementConditions and details
A visa can last up to 5 years before it must be extended. You must apply for an extension or an update before it expires or in the event of a change of job or employer. You can extend as many times as you wish as long as you meet the conditions. After 5 years, you may be eligible to apply for permanent settlement in the United Kingdom if the other conditions of that process are met. Changes of job remain subject to the conditions of the visa; a particular exception linked to the National Referral Mechanism is described below. What the visa allows and prohibitsConditions and details
The visa allows you to work in the eligible job, to study, to come with your spouse and children if their conditions are met, to do additional work in certain cases, to travel abroad and return, to do unpaid volunteering for certain structures, and to apply to settle after 5 years. It does not allow you to claim most public benefits or the State Pension, nor to change job or employer without having the visa updated. Under SW 18.3, a person referred to the National Referral Mechanism who has received a final positive decision (Conclusive Grounds) during their most recent permission may obtain a change to their work conditions: any work, including self-employment or volunteering, may then be permitted, except as a professional sportsperson or sports coach. This change is not automatic; the conditions actually granted remain decisive.Decision time and early submissionConditions and details
UKVI generally makes its decision within 3 weeks from outside the United Kingdom and 8 weeks from inside; a payment sometimes allows a faster decision to be obtained. UKVI may contact the applicant if the application takes longer, for example because documents must be verified, an interview is necessary or because of personal circumstances (a criminal conviction, for example).Nationals not covered by this procedureConditions and details
Under the immigration rules in force, a person cannot apply for the Skilled Worker visa as a national of Afghanistan. Irish citizens do not need permission to enter or stay in the United Kingdom, except in special cases, and British citizens do not need entry permission: this procedure is therefore not intended for them.
