Steps

  1. Check the VWP conditions: eligible nationality, electronic passport and a stay of 90 days at most. By air or sea, plan for a signatory carrier and a return ticket; by land, check the documentation specific to entry.
  2. Apply for a visa if the stay exceeds 90 days, if the air or sea journey uses a non-signatory carrier, if a ground of inadmissibility applies, or if the trip falls outside the activities permitted under the VWP.
  3. Submit the application as soon as you prepare for the trip, preferably before purchasing the tickets; it may be submitted at any time before departure.
  4. Complete the online form: warnings, applicant information, personal information, travel information, eligibility questions, application review, then payment.
  5. Check your email address, then note the application number displayed by the system and sent by email.
  6. Pay the ESTA fee: 10.62 USD for processing, plus 30 USD if authorization is granted, for a total of 40.62 USD from 16 October 2026. If the application is denied, only the processing fee is due.
  7. Check the response on the official website: authorization granted, travel not authorized or application pending; in the event of a refusal, apply for a visa at a United States embassy or consulate.
  8. Travel with the passport used for the application: the ESTA status is transmitted to the carriers and no printed document is required.
  9. Upon arrival, submit to inspection by a CBP officer, who decides on admission; fingerprints and a photograph are taken.
